Epic!

This blog entry is about a tool in Dr. Wang's PPT about previous T3PP results. Specifically Epic! in the software list.

 Lilli's Epic!  Class code czm4598

Epic! is an E-library that allows teachers to browse books from many different genres and content areas and assign them to students as reading. Teachers have the ability to input their class grade level and reading level system so they see books that are at the grade level and reading level of their students. There are also learning videos and audiobooks available.

Once an Epic! teacher account is set up the teacher can add students by having them put the class code in, the site has instructions listed for both laptops and phones. This is what the log in instructions for a laptop look like.

Teachers can assign and track progress on readings for students and there is an option to require a quiz after the reading. The quizzes are pre-made and cannot be customized, which is a limitation of this technology.

Most of the book are picture books. The topics that Epic! has listed are below, within each subject there are more options.

Overall this tool is very easy to use and has books and videos across a few different topics. I think that the likelihood of me using this in a future classroom is good, there is a large selection of books from many different genres and subjects available so it is a good resource when looking for classroom readings.
This technology would fall under the stimulate recall or prerequisite learning and presenting content categories of the 7 events framework. Epic! can be used as material for prerequisite learning by assigning reading about a topic so students gets an introduction to it and it can be used for presenting the content because content specific readings or videos can be assigned. Epic! could also be used for assessing the lesson outcome because there is an option to require a quiz after readings.

Epic is a great resource that I know a ton of teachers use, and this is a very informative post about it! I liked that you assessed all the different ways it can be used in the classroom and in the instruction sequence. I can see myself using Epic as an ELA tool in my future classroom. Great job!
